About Course

This course provides drivers, operators, and transport managers with a comprehensive understanding of vehicle defect reporting and its critical role in maintaining roadworthiness, operational safety, and compliance with UK regulations. It focuses entirely on defects, their identification, reporting, rectification, and audit, across a wide range of vehicle types, including Class 1 and Class 2 vehicles, curtain-sided vehicles, bin and refuse vehicles, HIABs, Moffett forklifts, and ADR vehicles.

Learners will gain in-depth knowledge of safety-critical defects, operational defects, cosmetic defects with safety implications, and intermittent defects, emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting rather than ticking boxes. The course explains daily walk-around inspections, pre- and post-use checks, and electronic and paper defect reporting systems, highlighting best practice for each. It also covers Vehicle Off-Road (VOR) scenarios, rectification records, and maintaining robust audit trails to demonstrate compliance and ensure fleet safety.

Through real-world scenarios and examples, participants will understand how poor defect reporting can lead to MOT failures, PMI inspection failures, vehicle downtime, or serious safety incidents, and how a well-managed system contributes to a strong safety culture. The course also guides operators and transport teams on monitoring defect records, handling multi-copy books, using electronic systems effectively, and ensuring timely repairs.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify and classify defects according to severity and urgency.
  • Understand how daily defect reporting supports MOT and PMI compliance.
  • Apply best practices for electronic and paper-based reporting systems.
  • Maintain accurate rectification records and audit-ready defect documentation.
  • Foster a culture of safety and accountability within transport operations.

This course is ideal for drivers, fleet managers, and operators who want to ensure vehicles are safe, legal, and fit for use, while protecting lives, maintaining operational efficiency, and meeting regulatory requirements.
