About Course

The Driver Safety course is designed to help professional drivers understand and apply safe working practices throughout every stage of their driving activities. The course focuses on reducing risk, improving awareness, and ensuring drivers operate safely, responsibly, and in line with legal and industry expectations.

The course begins by explaining what health and safety is and why it exists, placing driver safety within the wider context of protecting individuals, businesses, and the public. It then outlines legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, helping drivers understand their responsibilities and how legislation applies to everyday driving tasks.

Learners are guided through vehicle safety preparation, with clear instruction on pre-start checks to ensure vehicles are safe and roadworthy before use. Safe systems of work for fueling are covered to reduce risks associated with refuelling activities. The course also addresses loading operations and load security, highlighting how correct loading is essential for vehicle stability, braking, and overall road safety.

Starting the driver’s shift safely is explored in detail, including planning work activities, managing fatigue, and applying safe systems of work from the beginning of the day. Road safety is reinforced through guidance on leaving the premises safely, driving responsibly on public roads, and accessing delivery locations without creating unnecessary risk.

The course also covers working safely at customer sites, including understanding site rules and PPE requirements. Near miss reporting is introduced as an essential part of continuous improvement, encouraging drivers to identify hazards and report unsafe situations before they result in incidents.

The course concludes with a clear and consistent message that safety must be maintained from start to finish, throughout every journey and every task. This Driver Safety course supports safer behaviour, legal compliance, and higher professional standards across driving operations.
